Janez Šubic was born into a family of a local artisan and received his first training in art in his father’s workshop. During the years of his studies, first in Ljubljana with Janez Wolf, then in Venice and Rome, he got acquainted with idealistic and romantic religious painting, the light colouring of Venice, and the standards of 19th century academic studio painting. He worked in Vienna, Prague, and Kaiserslautern in Germany; in the latter place he was an art teacher until his sudden death. His oeuvre includes numerous religious pieces; he also painted portraits and frescoes. A great number of his drawings have also been preserved.
