Metzinger was the oldest of the four painters that formed the central group of Baroque art in Ljubljana. He arrived in the city from the disordered French region of Lorraine and ran a successful painting workshop here. He was in close contact with other artists in the city; his wife was godmother to a grandson of his colleague painter Jelovšek. More than three hundred and fifty oils by Metzinger survive in churches, monasteries and castles in Slovenia and Croatia. A distinctive religious sentiment, dynamic composition, imaginary and celestial landscape, and colour harmony in his works were the standard of quality and a source of inspiration deep into the 19th century.
