The renovation of the Narodni dom Palace, the oldest part of the National Gallery of Slovenia, is about to conclude. The Permanent Collection is spreading to the renovated halls, hence it will be closed to the public from 4 December 2015 through the end of January 2016.
The new Permanent Collection will feature 587 works of art and encompass the period between the Middle Ages and the middle of the 20th century. The Permanent Collection will take up 3100 m2 and will be curated chronologically. Existing collections, quality and available space directed the selection of the works of art. Before the renovation that began in 2012, the Permanent Collection featured 409 works of art. During the renovation, when the nation's most precious works of art were exhibited in the New Wing, the Permanent Collection featured 153 works of art.
From December 2015 through January 2016 most of the Gallery will stay closed to the public. Remaining open are the Entrance Hall with the spectacular Robba Fountain, new gallery café with exclusive Luiza Cake, inspired by Stroj's Luiza Pesjak, and completely new and modern Gallery Store. The Store offers books and merchandise made for the Gallery and products by Slovenian designers.
Art enthusiasts are able to view the exhibition Rihard Jakopič. Jottings. The exhibition of Jakopič's paintings and drawings is accompanied by a varied and broad event programme that includes workshops for children and adults, and guided tours.
The renovation of the National Gallery of Slovenia is financed by the state (15%) and by the European Regional Development Fund (85%), with the total grant estimated at 14 million Euros. Through the renovation the Gallery will gain 2200 m2 of new space, with the whole complex covering circa 15,000 m2.
Through the renovation the Gallery will integrate the Narodni dom Palace into its complex with the Entrance Hall and the New Wing and Slovenia will gain another modern and open museum.
