Building-site Slovenia Baustelle Slowenien is the title of an exhibition of contemporary Slovene architecture that has toured Germany and the Netherlands over the last few years. The exhibition and its catalogue are an attempt at a comprehensive presentation of Slovene architecture marking the country’s membership in the European Union.
The exhibition is a joint project of the DESSA architecture gallery of Ljubljana and the Berlin Art Academy (Akademie der Künste), the third oldest operating academy in Europe, which was founded back in 1696 and whose members have included almost all distinguished representatives of German culture. The academy’s department of architecture had already prepared a number of exhibitions under the common title Baustelle with the aim of presenting the architecture of “Eastern” countries. These included Poland (1994), Moscow (1995), the Czech Republic (1997), Hungary (1999) and Estonia (2001). The exhibition Baustelle Slowenien opened on 26 November 2004 at the Akademie der Künste in Berlin. The fact that three years had passed since the previous exhibition proved to be an advantage, because the exhibition coincided with Slovenia joining the European Union and it was put on display in one of the most important European capitals, which gave it a new dimension.
