Figures such as that depicted on this painting are usually identified as Saint Jerome, but there is no attribute here to confirm such an idea. The subject could also be one of the evangelists, belonging to some series. It is very carefully composed with a skillful use of light and shade. This characteristic would indicate that it could be dated to a happy period of Petrini’s work, to the time between 1725 and 1735. The structure of this painting is almost geometrical: the strongly illuminated man and the background with trees and clouds form diagonals. At their intersection is a highlight – the blue of the saint’s cloak.

Provenance: Dr. Izidor Cankar, art historian and Yugoslav ambassador to Argentina, bought this as a painting by Daniele Crespi in the “Galleria de Don Lorenzo Pellerano” in Buenos Aires on 27 April 1937, Cat. No. 638. – On the back of the frame is a label with the number 638 and the stamp: Guerrico & Williams / ...Pellerano. – Lent to the Government of Slovenia in 1978 for Brdo Castle near Kranj. – Purchased by the Narodna galerija in January 1992.
