The Fusine Lakes, today just a half-hour’s walk from the triple border of Slovenia–Austria–Italy, is still a popular tourist attraction today. Alongside other Alpine lakes (Bled, Wörthersee, Bohinj), Fusine served as a regular source of inspiration for local painters. Grilc captured a lovely day in the mountains, though the growing and billowing clouds in the background are a reminder that the weather in the Alps is unpredictable, though they are painted with less conviction than in Karinger’s (NG S 1909) or Pernhart’s (NG S 296) portrayals of storms around a lake. The painting thus in style lags a generation (or two) behind its contemporaries, and the painter might have used a photograph as his source material.
The same year that the painting of the lake was produced, Grilc’s Tihožitje (Still Life) was included in the First Slovenian Art Exhibition, but mountain vistas remained his focus in the final decade of his career.
