On the Outskirts of a Town
1941, oil, canvas, 32,5 x 40 cm
signed and dated lower centre: Morandi 1941
NG S 1990, National Gallery of Slovenia, Ljubljana
This painting, which is signed and dated Morandi 1941 at the lower edge in the middle, is an excellent work by the great Bolognese artist. Large houses in a suburb of Bologna, set on a hill, are submerged in motionless, timeless light which knows neither dawn nor dusk. In complete silence it lives with the inner life of an exceptionally careful brush, limited to the essential, using a reduced scale of harmonious brown and muted tones.
Provenance: Presented to the Narodna galerija in 1942 by the Italian occupation authority of the province; confirmation of the inventorisation of the painting dated 16 April 1943, old Inv. No. 1867; 1952–1983 on loan to the Moderna galerija.
