GALa Birthday
Celebrate your birthday with Gal the Dwarf! His friends, the gallery guides, invite kids to Gal’s Room and show them around the Dwarf’s magical dwelling. What kind of clues has our mischievous green friend prepared for us? The birthday girl/boy and her/his guests can put on Gal’s costume and take a picture on the GALa throne.
You can choose between six different programmes that take children on a discovery trail around the Permanent Collection or along the path of different creative challenges.
Available in english language.

The Dwarf’s Chest
Gal lends us his Green Chest that holds mysterious objects - loud, fragrant and attractive to touch. We smell a rose, listen to the storm, ride a hobbyhorse, put on clogs and try many other things. Past which works of art do the objects lead us? At the workshop, we make drawings for the birthday girl/boy and make a booklet for her/him that we adorn with original birthday congratulations.
The Goldhorn’s Kingdom
In the gallery,
we will get to know the magical creatures from folk tales. We find out, who is Hrust
the Giant, how the elves made Lake Bled and why Goldhorn used his golden horns
to destroy the mountain paradise under Triglav. We will also meet two Water Men
- the one that disappeared between the waves of Ljubljanica and the one that
made Lake Cerknica. Then we will make puppets and perform the evergreen
Slovenian tale of a mighty protector of mountains and nature.
The Queen’s Zoo
Sitting before the portrait of Empress Maria Theresia we will recall one of the acquisitions of her reign: a royal zoo. We use objects and riddles to look for different animals in the pictures: from domesticated pets to wild beasts. We learn what kind of beliefs spread around the animals throughout centuries and tell a few Slovenian fables. In the workshop, we use stiff cardboard to make and colour our favourite furry companion or to make animal masks. And in the Gal’s Room, we find out if Gal also has a pet …
For Little Misses and Misters
Paying a visit to the Permanent Collection, we get to know fashion styles from history. Grey hair and wigs, skin as white and smooth as porcelain, a waist pinched by a corset are just some of the more popular fashion trend we can see in pictures. We explore what types of make-up and accessories were used by ladies and by gentlemen and what are cosmetic products made of. We will practise the royal curtsy and then learn how to paint on textiles. What about Gal? Don’t you want to learn about his timeless attire?
The Dragon
Dragons hide inside the Permanent Collection! We look for them in pictures and sculptures and find out, if the story of St George and the dragon has a happy conclusion. In the workshop we use cardboard, collage and colours to make our very own dragons!
The Gallery’s Superheroes
The works of art often depict scenes from history, of battles and of nobility. We will talk about the gods and heroes of Antiquity. Besides bravery and valour, these women and men possessed different superpowers. What is our superpower? Depicted stories will inspire us to make clothes, swords, shields and other objects with unusual powers that will transform us into superheroes!
